Vivo took the wraps off its flagship X100 series in India a few days ago, comprising the Vivo X100 Pro 5G and the X100 5G. Its slightly superior specs and one-inch camera sensor got the X100 Pro 5G most of the attention, but for many, the Vivo X100 5G is every bit as good value for money.

While it does not have the Vivo X100 Pro’s one-inch main sensor, the X100 5G still boasts a very good 50-megapixel main sensor with OIS, a 64-megapixel telephoto camera with 3.2x optical zoom and a 50-megapixel ultrawide camera, all designed in collaboration with the legendary Zeiss. It also has many of the features of the X100 Pro — the 6.78-inch AMOLED display with 2800 x 1260 resolution and 120 Hz refresh rate, the flagship level MediaTek Dimensity 9300 chip, the premium design with glass front and back, stereo speakers, IP68 dust and water resistance, and Android 14 out of the box. And its 5,00 mAh battery actually charges faster than the X100 Pro 5G – 120W as compared to 100W.

All this with a significantly lower price tag — the Vivo X100  starts at Rs 63,999, well below the Rs 89,999 of the Vivo X100 Pro 5G. But that does not free the Vivo X100 5G from the burden of dealing with some very formidable competition. Standing in its way are a number of devices that claim to deliver as much as it does and even more.

These five phones in particular have everything it takes to rattle the cage of Vivo’s latest Pro-less X series wonder:

iPhone 15: The Godphone, Now With Even Better Cameras

Price: Rs 72,900 onwards

Any smartphone launched in the vicinity of Rs 65,000 will have to deal with the shadow of the latest iPhone. So it is hardly surprising that one of the toughest challengers to the Vivo X100 5G is the iPhone 15, which although more expensive, comes with better cameras than before (including a magnificent 48-megapixel main sensor), a magnificent 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display with a Dynamic Island and runs on the A16 Bionic chip that, although a year old, still outperforms most of the competition with ease.

Add to that a new frosted-finish back, super compact form factor,  excellent speakers and the convenience of a USB Type-C port and top it off with the incredibly smooth and regularly updated iOS operating system with terrific security and a rich app ecosystem and you have a headache for every premium device out there, and not just the Vivo X100 5G.

Google Pixel 7 Pro: Still A Worthy Pixel, Still A Worthy Pro

Price: Rs 63,999

One of the most talked about and acclaimed camera phones of 2023.  Although its successor has since come along, Google’s Pixel 7 Pro is still available and thanks to a reduced price tag, is a viable option for anyone wanting a premium phone with superb cameras for around Rs 65,000.

The Pixel 7 Pro’s 50-megapixel main sensor with OIS, 48-megapixel telephoto with OIS and 12-megapixel ultra wide sensor, come with Google’s computational photography skills and still deliver stunning detail. What’s more, the telephoto even now delivers one of the best zooms we have seen on a smartphone.

The phone comes with a good 6.7-inch quad HD AMOLED display, stereo speakers and a 5,000mAh battery that supports wireless charging (although it charges only at 23W, both wired and wirelessly).

Google’s Tensor G2 chip is not the fastest but can handle most tasks smoothly and enables a number of smart functions on the Pixel 7 Pro. This being a Pixel, you get a clean Android experience with assured (and timely) Android updates.

Round that off with the trademark Pixel design with Gorilla Glass Victus on the front and back, that camera bar on the back, and IP68 dust and water resistance, and this becomes one of the best premium value-for-money flagships around, much to the discomfort of the Vivo X100.

OnePlus 11 5G Marble Odyssey: Scoring In Looks As Well As Performance

Price: Rs 64,999

The OnePlus 12 is around the corner even as this is being written, but that does not change the fact that its predecessor is still a formidable proposition. We are in particular, very impressed by the Marble Odyssey variant of the OnePlus 11 5G which came with a very different marble-like finish on the back, making it one of the most distinct phones in the market in terms of appearance.

It remains outstanding in terms of performance too with a 6.7-inch quad HD AMOLED with 120 Hz refresh rate and powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor with a staggering 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. The cameras come in collaboration with the legendary Hasselblad and feature a very good 50-megapixel main sensor with OIS, a 48-megapixel ultrawide and a 32-megapixel special portrait sensor, all of which deliver some superb photographs.

You also get OnePlus’ clean OxygenOS, stereo speakers, and a large 5,000mAh battery with 100W SUPERVOOC charging and a charger in the box. Enough to make you Never Settle for anything else in the segment.

Xiaomi 13 Pro 5G: The Like-able Leica In The House

Price: Rs 74,999

It is almost a year old and is priced slightly higher than the Vivo X100 5G but the Xiaomi 13 Pro remains one of the best phones for anyone looking for wonderful photography in a flagship phone.

The Xiaomi 13 Pro 5G not only boasts a ceramic back, a front with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus, a flagship level Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor and a brilliant 6.7-inch quad-HD AMOLED display with 120Hz refresh rate, but also comes with a unique triple 50-megapixel camera setup made in collaboration with the legendary Leica. The three cameras are a magnificent one-inch Sony sensor, a special floating telephoto lens and an ultrawide. Together, allied with some uniquely Leica touches, they deliver amazing photography, even in monochrome.

A large 4,820mAh battery with support for 120W wired and 50W wireless charging round off this formidable device, which has also been updated to HyperOS even as this is being written. All of which makes it immensely likeable even today. Or should that be Leica-ble?

Vivo X90 Pro 5G: Last Year’s Awesome Remains The Same

Price: Rs 66,000 onwards

Its official price is still listed in the vicinity of Rs 90,000, but the Vivo X90 Pro 5G is available at many retailers in the range of Rs 65,000 – Rs 75,000, and at that price, it is a definite threat to the “Pro-less” variant of its successor.

It may run on a slightly older MediaTek DImensity 9200 processor, but it comes with a one-inch 50-megapixel sensor similar to the one on the Vivo X100 Pro, backed by a 50-megapixel telephoto (although only with 2x optical zoom) and a 12 megapixel ultrawide, all with support from Zeiss optics.

It also has a very similar 6.78-inch AMOLED display with 2800 x 1260 resolution and 120 Hz refresh rate, just like on the Vivo X100 and X100 Pro. Some even feel it looks better with a distinct metal band beneath the camera unit on its back. It comes with a smaller 4870 mAh battery but charges at 120W and also brings 50W wireless charging to the table.

At its reduced price, it is a proper pain to the Vivo X100, especially in terms of camera performance, which is one of the cornerstones of Vivo’s X series anyway.
