TMC MP Nusrat Jahan Grilled By ED For 6 Hrs In Flat-Selling Scam Case Involving Senior Citizens

Nusrat Jahan, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) Member of Parliament, faced an extensive six-hour questioning session by Enforcement Directorate (ED) investigators on Tuesday. The inquiry pertains to a case involving the alleged defrauding of senior citizens who were promised flats in the New Town area of Kolkata, news agency PTI reported a senior official within the ED as confirming.

The 33-year-old actor-turned-politician, who had been summoned by the federal agency for questioning the previous week, was subjected to inquiries regarding her role as the director of the real estate company implicated in the case, among other aspects connected to the ongoing investigation, according to PTI’s report.

In response to queries from reporters upon leaving the ED’s office in the evening, Nusrat Jahan remarked, “I answered all the questions I was asked. Thank you so much”, as quoted by the report.

An ED official disclosed that during the extensive interrogation, Nusrat Jahan was also questioned about a substantial loan (amounting to over Rs one crore) allegedly procured from the company in question. The ED is scrutinising how the loan was repaid.

“She has submitted some documents to our officers and they are being probed. Our officers also asked her to specify the respective roles of Rakesh Singh and small-time actor Ruplekha Mitra who were co-directors in the company,” he told PTI.

Bengali actress Ruplekha Mitra has also been summoned by the ED for questioning in connection with the same case.

During a press conference at the state headquarters, senior TMC minister Partha Bhowmick addressed the matter saying, “We have nothing to say regarding it. From the very first day, we have said we have zero tolerance towards corruption. She was summoned, she had gone and cooperated”, as quoted by PTI.

The ED’s investigation follows a complaint lodged by a group of senior citizens, who alleged they were deceived by a real estate company that promised them flats in Kolkata’s New Town area, situated on the city’s eastern fringes.

Nusrat Jahan has vehemently denied any involvement in fraudulent practices and clarified that she had resigned from her directorial role within the company in March 2017.

The TMC Lok Sabha MP representing Basirhat also clarified that she had borrowed a loan from the company, which was repaid with interest in May 2017.
