You can capture pro-grade video without necessarily investing in the latest iPhone, thanks to apps like the Blackmagic camera, a tool even used by Apple itself.

Every year, new iPhone models come out, bearing the latest features. Apple does an excellent job marketing these features, and often, these features revolve around the camera experience.

This year, Apple chose to add the ability to shoot in ProRes LOG to the iPhone 15 Pro models, and this is without a doubt a Pro-grade feature that will come in handy for creative professionals, such as content creators and those looking to shoot high-quality videos on their smartphones.

Blackmagic camera allows for greater flexibility on high-end phones like the iPhone 15 Pro.

However, to shoot pro-grade video, you don’t necessarily have to invest in the latest iPhone model, and even if you have an iPhone that’s a couple of years old, using the BlackMagic camera app can help you shoot in manual settings, bringing the best results in post-production.

The best part is—the BlackMagic app on the iPhone is free. And it lets you do everything you want from a manual camera app.

What Can You Do With It

For starters, this app lets you shoot in manual mode—something that we still are yet to experience “officially” on an iPhone. This means you can set the ISO, adjust the white balance, choose the shutter speed to create the exact look that you want. You can even set the amount of stabilisation that you want.

And, of course, other professional staples like being able to choose the codec you shoot in, the color space, and the resolution are welcome additions as well.

So, in theory, if you wanted, you could get decent quality videos out of, let’s say, even an iPhone SE second generation. We tried it ourselves, and it does squeeze out the most of the aging hardware. However, do note that you need an iPhone XS or later model, running on iOS 16, or higher to use this app.

Plus, if you are trying to get into filmmaking and want to try how manual settings work, this could be a good starting point as it needs no investment apart from that device you already may have.

Apple Used The BlackMagic App To Shoot Their Keynote

Parts of Apple’s recent ‘Scary Fast’ keynote were shot on an iPhone 15 Pro, but to get the most out of it, even Apple resorted to the BlackMagic camera app. In fact, this app lets you shoot ProRes LOG in 4K 60fps on the iPhone 15 Pro, which is something that you can only do after you record on an external SSD, if using the native iPhone camera app. This speaks volumes about how capable the app is, so if you have some time on your hands, and if you are feeling creative, it could certainly be a good addition to your arsenal of apps.
