Watching marketing guru Scott Galloway’s video, where he shares why and how the new CEO is the former COO or supply chain head, had me turning up the volume one morning. “So supply chain, kids, OMG, that’s the place you want to be right now,” said Galloway.

Look around you. A dog parent in New Delhi in India is not thinking twice before coughing up a huge premium including import duties and taxes to get professional grade canine gear all the way from South Carolina in the US.

In Telangana, a 35-year-old software engineer is paying nearly double for his favorite biryani to be shipped to his doorstep from Kolkata. Similarly, an elderly store owner’s breakfast in Vancouver, Canada is not over until he sips his favorite strong tea flown down from Assam.

The world that we know is changing. And so are consumers, who if they like a product or a service, are willing to get it, no matter the cost. This is making companies sit up and take notice of the fact that a responsive and efficient supply chain based on consumer needs is the need of the hour.

A well-designed supply chain that works backwards from the consumer need, extending all the way to the origin of the product offers several benefits to the entire business, including improved customer satisfaction, cost reduction, enhanced profitability, and competitive advantage showcasing its impact on the bottom line of a company’s P&L statement.

To quote supply chain thought leader and author, Richard Sherman, “The supply chain is the heart of a company’s operation. It has the power to make or break a business.”

So, here are a few things that a “black sheep” supply chain can do:
