Billy Beane, manager of American baseball team Oakland Athletics, used ‘sabermetrics’ – the art and science of marrying historical data and in-game analytics – to create a competitive lineup, on a tight budget. His innovative strategy achieved enormous success in Major League Baseball at the turn of the century. He went on to inspire Michael Lewis’s 2003 book Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game and its 2011 film adaptation starring Brad Pitt.
Data data everywhere | Moneyball is one word that best captures this century’s essence, globally. About the same time as the book an obsession developed for gathering evermore data. A plethora of data was also generated as internet and social media grew exponentially. Captivated by Big Data, people aimed to churn it up to formulate tactics across areas – from policymaking to business and industry, sports to healthcare and elections. It ushered in the moneyball era.
