Passion possesses a transformative power that can help individuals conquer their deepest fears and reshape their personalities. When someone discovers their true passion, whether it be in art, music, sports, or any other pursuit, it ignites a fervent energy within them. This intense enthusiasm acts as a driving force, compelling them to confront their phobias head-on. The sheer determination and focus derived from pursuing what one loves can override paralyzing fears, enabling individuals to face challenges with newfound courage.

Ever since I discovered my passion for writing, I have been able to overcome two life-long disabilities- not physical but psychological, that had hitherto hindered not only my cognitive development but also kept a significant part of my personality under wraps. I was always a shy and introverted person who would sacrifice anything to stay in the shadows and would rather give up my right arm than talk to anyone- familiar or stranger. I was a recluse who shied away from social gatherings and small talk, even at the expense of being labelled a ‘snob’.

Writing exposed me to a whole new universe where I found myself in the company of like-minded people who could follow not only my train of thoughts but also respected my stream-of-consciousness. Gradually, I broke the chrysalis that surrounded me and donned the multi-hued rainbow that gave wings to my imagination. I now look forward to interactions with complete strangers- taxi drivers, janitors, hospitality staff- anyone and everyone who could give me an idea or be the dramatis personae for my next writing.

The other psychological barrier that I suffered from, all through my adolescence till now, has been the fear of travelling alone. ‘Hodophobia’ is the technical term to define my condition. Unknown and crowded places like airports and railway stations made me jittery and anxious. While driving to my workplace and back home, I used to take a fixed route. I would suffer panic attacks if ever I had to take a detour due to road blockades or other reasons.

Last month, I took my first leap of faith while following my passion. I had to attend a literary event in Vadodara for which I had to travel alone. I took a Shatabdi express followed by the Delhi metro and a flight to Vadodara, all on my own to reach my destination. What seemed to be a mammoth task for me was accomplished with ease and dexterity because my passion was right beside me, like a loyal companion, guiding and propelling me to go on and chase my dreams on my newly acquired wings of imagination.

In the process of pursuing passions, people learn valuable life skills such as discipline, patience, and perseverance. Overcoming obstacles related to phobias becomes a part of this journey, leading to a profound transformation. As individuals conquer their fears, they become self-assured, adaptable, and open to new experiences, ultimately shaping a vibrant and resilient personality driven by their passions.

I have found my beacon light in my passion for writing. Find out what drives your passion.
