Rain Lashes Parts Of Delhi, Brings Respite From Heat. More Showers Likely Today

Rain continues to lash parts of Delhi, which kept the mercury in check for the second day in a row. More showers are likely today in a few places as clouds persist in the national capital. Several parts of Delhi witnessed light rain. The showers brought relief for the citizens as the maximum temperature settled at 32 degrees Celsius. The Regional Meteorological Centre in Delhi on Sunday predicted that light to moderate intensity rain with thunderstorms will continue over Delhi and adjoining areas.

According to IMD there is a possibility of continuation of light to moderate spell of rainfall for another 2-3 hours at few places in the city due to persisting clouds. “Delhi Radar shows persistence of clouds over Delhi and NCR region leading to possibility of continuation of light to moderate spell of rainfall for another 2-3 hours at a few places over Delhi and NCR,” IMD said on X.

“Light to moderate intensity rain with thunderstorm moderate intensity rain over few places would continue to occur over and adjoining areas of entire Delhi and NCR ( Loni Dehat, Hindon AF Station, Bahadurgarh, Ghaziabad, Indirapuram, Chhapraula, Noida, Dadri, Gurugram, Faridabad, Manesar, Ballabhgarh),” IMD shared in a post on social media platform, X. 

According to an IMD statement, the maximum and minimum temperatures in Delhi in the last 24 hours have been 32 and 24 degree Celsius respectively. 

Meanwhile, parts of the national capital received light rain on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday. Several areas of the city including Safdarjung, airport, Rajghat, Vasant Kunj, Munirka, Narela, etc. received light rain on Saturday night which continued till Sunday early morning.

This comes at a time when world leaders are in the city for G20 Summit. More rainfall is expected to lash Delhi in the next couple of days, as per the weather forecast, bringing further respite from the humid weather conditions that persisted in the national capital for the last few days. 

IMD has also forecasted rain in several districts of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. “Mattanhail, Jhajjar, Farukhnagar, Kosali (Haryana) Sikandrabad, Bulandshahar, Shikarpur, Pahasu, Debai, Narora, Atrauli, Iglas, Raya, Hathras, Mathura, Jalesar, Sadabad, Agra, Jajau (U.P.) during next 2 hours,” IMD said.

As part of its efforts to provide specialised and real-time weather forecasts, the IMD has installed an additional automatic weather station near Pragati Maidan, the site of the G20 Summit that commenced on Saturday.

It is to be noted that in July, heavy rains coupled with the release of water from the Hathnikund barrage in Haryana resulted in flooding in low-lying areas of the national capital and its surrounding regions.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for several Maharashtra districts, warning residents of heavy rain. The yellow alert indicates that there is a chance of isolated heavy rain with localised flooding in low-lying areas.

The alert includes Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg, and warns residents and authorities to brace themselves for heavy rain in the next 24 to 48 hours. The IMD forecast calls for heavy rain in isolated areas of Palghar, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg on Saturday.
