An infant stuck in a bore well in Odisha’s Sambalpur district was rescued on Monday several hours after locals discovered the child. The baby, who appeared to be newly born, is rushed to a hospital for necessary medical attention, according to officials, as reported by PTI. The incident unfolded in Laripali village, situated in the Rengali area, where the child was found stuck in a bore well, measuring 15-20 feet in depth.

The state’s Special Relief Commissioner promptly dispatched fire services personnel from Rengali, along with a team from the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force in Jharsuguda, to the site, as per PTI’s report. Additionally, an NDRF team from Mundali in Cuttack was mobilised to support the ongoing rescue efforts, as confirmed by Gyanranjan Dash, the managing director of Odisha Disaster Management Authority.

The incident came to light when local residents, responding to the cries of the infant, discovered the baby trapped inside the bore well. The bore well, abandoned and located in a forest close to the village, presented challenges for the rescue team due to its remote location.

The circumstances leading to the incident remain unclear, with authorities stating that it is unknown how the child ended up in the well. Suspicions among locals suggest the possibility that the infant might have been deliberately abandoned in the bore well.

Sambalpur’s Additional District Magistrate, Pradeep Sahoo, provided updates on the ongoing rescue efforts, stating, “Rescue operation has started, and oxygen is supplied into the bore well. The ODRAF team has dug a parallel pit.” Expressing optimism, he conveyed hope that the child would be safely rescued soon.
