This marks the fourth round of missile launches by North Korea in 2024. The announcement, made by North Korean state media on Saturday, followed the detection by South Korea’s military of multiple cruise missiles being launched into waters off the country’s western coast, news agency AP reported.

Photographs released by North Korea depicted a low-flying cruise missile hitting a coastal target, and another projectile ascending after being launched from the ground.

In a potential indication of nuclear capabilities, North Korea revealed the development of larger warheads for cruise missiles. The Korean Central News Agency, North Korea’s official outlet, did not specify the number of missiles tested or provide details on their performance. The agency stated that these tests were part of the country’s “normal activities” for military development and asserted that they did not compromise the security of neighboring nations.

North Korea’s Emphasis On Nuclear Weapons, New Anti-Aircraft Missile

According to AP’s report, experts suggest that North Korea’s emphasis on larger warheads may be a signal that these missiles could be armed with nuclear weapons, adding to the nation’s arsenal of ballistic missiles, including those capable of reaching the continental United States.

Regarding the new anti-aircraft missile, analysts speculate on potential collaboration between North Korea and Russia in advancing this technology, the report mentioned. The two nations are deepening military cooperation amid separate confrontations with the United States.

Earlier in January, North Korea conducted tests of a submarine-launched cruise missile, seen as a significant step in building a nuclear-armed navy, according to leader Kim Jong Un. The country also tested a long-range cruise missile with nuclear capabilities, potentially putting U.S. military bases in Japan within reach.

According to AP’s report, Friday’s missile launches occurred shortly after Kim reiterated his commitment to strengthening naval forces during an inspection of warship construction at a Nampho shipyard on the west coast. Kim’s recent emphasis on building a nuclear-armed navy is portrayed as a response to perceived threats from the United States, South Korea, and Japan, which have increased their military cooperation in response to North Korea’s nuclear ambitions.

Experts express concerns that Kim, buoyed by advancements in his nuclear arsenal and bolstered ties with Russia, may escalate pressure on his rivals during the election year in the United States and South Korea. The long-term goal, they believe, is to compel the U.S. to recognise North Korea as a nuclear power and negotiate security concessions and sanctions relief from a position of strength, the report mentioned.
