‘NewsClick’ founder Prabir Purkayastha knocked on the door of the Supreme Court challenging his arrest and detention under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in connection with allegetions of the portal receiving Chinese funding to promote ‘anti-national’ propaganda. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for the editor, mentioned the matter for urgent listing before the Supreme Court. The top court has asked Sibal to circulate papers of the case and it will take a call on listing the case.

Arrested on allegations of receiving money to spread Chinese propaganda, Purkayastha had earlier told a Delhi court that “not a penny has come from China”. Purkayastha and Chakravarty, who were arrested by the Special Cell of the Delhi Police on October 3, had earlier moved the high court challenging their arrest and subsequent police custody, and sought immediate release as interim relief.
