Nagar Kirtan is a Sikh festival that is both incredibly joyful and profound. Think of it as a large procession with music, singing, and a lot of uplifting energy. Following this magnificent religion, Sikhs assemble for this occasion. They march through the streets, and the Guru Granth Sahib, their holy book, is carried by a magnificently decorated float in the centre of the procession. Along with performing outstanding martial skills, those in the parade also sing songs and give away free food to onlookers. The Sikhs celebrate their values, their solidarity, and Guru Nanak’s teachings in the brightest and liveliest way they can.

For the occasion of Nagar Kirtan, which honours the 419th birthday of Guru Granth Sahib, people of various ages and socioeconomic backgrounds have assembled. The dynamic Punjabi community gets together for this festive occasion, and people from all walks of life are cordially invited to explore and enjoy their rich culture. But this year’s Nagar Kirtan took a startling turn as the movement of khalistan was seen by a group of people.

Young attendees opted to play Punjabi music with aggressive and occasionally violent themes as entertainment. The sharp contrast between this decision and the peaceful atmosphere of the “Waheguru” chanting captured the attention of many spectators at that precise moment.

Also, the only worst part of this auspicious nagar kirtan was the idea of ‘khalistan’ being promoted which was basically mixing the politics with divine religious feelings because not everybody present their supports this ideology.
