Layoff Season Beginning Again? Google Fires Employees From Its News Division – Report – News18

Throughout the course of this year, we witnessed tech companies undergoing multiple rounds of layoffs—with companies downsizing their talent pools, calling employees back to the office (abolishing work from home), and even offering minimal raises.

Now, after laying off 12,000 people, in the beginning of this year, Google has decided to let go of about 40-45 more individuals from its news division, as confirmed by CNBC. “We’re deeply committed to a vibrant information ecosystem, and news is a part of that long-term investment,” said Google’s spokesperson.

He added, “We’ve made some internal changes to streamline our organization. A small number of employees were affected. We’re supporting everyone with a transition period, outplacement services, and severance as they look for new opportunities at Google and beyond.”

Notably, this marks the third time this year that Google has downsized its talent. Last month, Google terminated hundreds of employees from its recruitment division. The company claimed that it was “continuing to invest in top engineering and technical talent while also meaningfully slowing the pace of our overall hiring.” This is why the need for a large recruiter talent base has diminished, leading to a reduction in the number of recruitment roles. This move followed the aforementioned layoff of 12,000 positions across different product teams at Google.

That being said, Google isn’t the only tech giant reducing its workforce. Other major companies, including Amazon and Meta, have also laid off employees, primarily to cut operational costs. Meta let go of 11,000 individuals in November last year, and Amazon reduced its workforce by 9,000 in March of this year.
