Kanpur Metro: Construction Work Begins For 3 Underground Stations – News18

The Kanpur Metro Rail Project’s Corridor-2 (between CSA University and Barra-8) will have a 4.10 km (approximately) subterranean segment from Rawatpur to Double Puliya.

On April 1, senior Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) officials and contracting agencies began excavating the ground to lower the panel of the first Diaphragm Wall (D-Wall) at this section’s Rawatpur underground station.

After the tender was awarded in December 2023, pre-construction work on the portion began, including soil testing, barricading, utility relocation and so on. With the start of the excavation operation for the D-Wall, the building of this segment has progressed to the next level.

The segment will include the construction of metro stations in Rawatpur, Kakadeo and Double Puliya. Rawatpur Underground Metro stop would be an important stop connecting Kanpur Metro’s two routes, according to the Times of India. Metro passengers will transfer trains at this station to travel from first to second or second to first corridor stations.

The D-Wall serves as an underground metro station’s border. It will be built from small rectangular panels. Furthermore, the D-Wall at Rawatpur Metro Station would be made up of 65 similar panels of various sizes.

These Kanpur Metro Corridor-2 underground stations will be developed utilising the ‘Top-Down Method,’ which means that construction will begin from the top and work will continue down. First, the roof slab will be prepared, followed by the construction of concourse platform levels.

This strategy is being used to limit the impact on traffic because the road barricades will be reduced after the first storey is built beneath the ground. The development work below ground will continue, and vehicle traffic will finally flow smoothly on the route. This technology is also being used to build Corridor-1’s underground parts.

The UPMRC plans to begin operations on both Kanpur Metro corridors in 2024-25, as per reports. The first corridor, which runs from IIT Kanpur to Naubasta, will be fully operational by November 2024. The second, which runs from Agriculture University to Barra, will be commissioned in December 2025, reports add.

In addition, the European Investment Bank (EIB) has offered around 650 million euros of overall finance for the Kanpur Metro Rail Project, with the remaining supplied by the central and state governments. The Kanpur Metro Rail Project’s final cost is anticipated to be around Rs 11,076 crore.
