India’s EV Transition: How Lithium-Ion Cell Tech Development, Production Can Help

India is currently experiencing a significant surge in the electric vehicle (EV) market, with domestic electric two-wheeler (EV) sales projected to grow at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 49 per cent until 2030. In line with this growth, the Indian government has set ambitious targets, aiming for 70 per cent of commercial vehicles and 30 per cent of private vehicles to be electric by the end of 2030. To support these goals, the government has implemented various policies, subsidies, and regulations to promote EV adoption and ensure a green transition.

Additionally, India has set an ambitious target of installing 500 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy capacity by 2030, with 41.5 GW dedicated to battery energy storage systems for grid integration. The government has also incentivised the establishment of 4,000 megawatt-hours of battery storage systems through projects and tenders, with a commitment of over $450 million.

Price Control: When India produces its lithium-ion cells, it gains better control over pricing. In contrast, purchasing cells from an open market exposes the nation to unpredictable price fluctuations, controlled solely by vendors.

Customisation: Domestic cell production allows for customisation. Lithium-ion cells available in the market are often designed for North American climate conditions and driving patterns. India experiences a wide range of temperatures and driving conditions, necessitating cells tailored for local needs.

Innovation and Improvement: With domestic production, India can rapidly innovate and improve lithium-ion cell technology. Dependency on global suppliers limits the pace of technological advancements.

Supply Chain Security: Relying solely on international suppliers introduces supply chain vulnerabilities. Domestic production ensures a stable supply of high-quality cells, reducing dependence on external factors. 

Indigenisation: As India aims for massive EV and stationary storage targets, it must indigenise its battery production. Lithium-ion cells constitute 80 per cent of a battery, making their domestic production crucial for achieving energy independence.

Reducing Trade Deficits: Domestic production reduces India’s reliance on neighbouring countries for lithium-ion cells, ultimately lowering trade deficits.

Attracting Talent: Lithium-ion cell technology development attracts engineering talent, addressing the brain drain issue as skilled professionals find opportunities within India.

Wealth Creation: Domestic production creates a robust ecosystem, including material science companies, leading to wealth creation within the country.

Economic Growth: A strong domestic supply chain contributes to economic well-being, capital retention, and job creation, particularly in the rapidly growing EV and energy storage sectors.

India’s pursuit of energy independence, reduced trade deficits, and economic growth hinge on the development and production of lithium-ion cells domestically. These cells are the heart of electric vehicles and energy storage systems. By taking control of this critical component, India can not only meet its ambitious EV and renewable energy targets but also demonstrate a cleaner, smarter, and more sustainable way to build battery solutions for a decarbonised future. Domestic lithium-ion cell production is the key to India’s energy transformation and a brighter, more prosperous future for the nation.
