Kavin Karthik, an Indian-origin engineer hired by Google straight out of IIT-Madras, has announced his departure from the tech giant after over a decade. Karthik will be joining OpenAI, the parent company of ChatGPT, as a member of the Technical Staff. Karthik took to LinkedIn and X (formerly Twitter) to share his excitement about the transition.

“Google was more than a workplace; it was a crucible of growth and innovation that defined my 20s,” he expressed, reflecting on his tenure. “The opportunity to work alongside phenomenal leaders and teammates was nothing short of a privilege, and I’m profoundly grateful for the invaluable lessons and experiences gained.”

OpenAI’s President and Co-founder, Greg Brockman, extended a warm welcome to Karthik, acknowledging his arrival at the artificial intelligence start-up. “Welcome to the team,” wrote Brockman, to which Karthik responded with gratitude.

In his new role at OpenAI, Karthik aims to focus on “harnessing the transformative power of AI with ChatGPT,” signaling a commitment to advancing artificial intelligence technologies.

The news of Karthik’s move sparked congratulations from several users, wishing him success in his new endeavour.

OpenAI, headquartered in San Francisco and led by CEO Sam Altman, has been a focal point of attention in the tech world. Altman, briefly removed from the company last November, returned with a new board, ushering in significant changes.

Karthik’s journey from IIT-Madras to Google and now to OpenAI mirrors his exceptional career trajectory. In 2013, he was among three IITians offered a remarkable Rs 92 lakh salary placement by Google, showcasing his talent and potential.

His alma mater, IIT-Madras, has been instrumental in nurturing tech talents, including Google’s CEO, Sundar Pichai. Pichai, hailing from Chennai, also attended IIT-Madras before furthering his studies in prestigious institutions like Stanford University and Wharton School.
