Ideas Of India 3.0: Musician duo Sourendro Mullick and Soumyojit Das addressed the third edition of ABP Network’s Ideas of India Summit sharing their views and presenting melodious songs on a session titled ‘Ragas to Rap: The Roots of Rhythm’. They began their performance by singing the song ‘Naam Ghum Jaayega’ which is based on the beautiful Raga- Yaman Kalyan. But before that, Soumyojit talked about Indian classical music and ragas which are strong pillars of our country.

He said, “Indian classical music and Indian folk music are two very, very strong pillars of our country and we have so many ideas. Every one of us have our small little ideas and when put together, all these ideas make our country. So, the first thing that they will do is sing and perform a raga for you, which is Raga Yaman- one of those early raagas that a student learns.”

After singing ‘Naam Ghum Jaayega’ Soumyojit added, “You will be surprised to know that almost every composer from the film industry that you know, has never missed a chance to compose something in Yaman.”

Having said this, the music-duo led the audience to a journey comprising a series of evergreen songs based on Raga Yaman Kalyan composed by legendary composers of the country including Gulzar, Tagore and many others. While Soumyojit impressed everyone with his vocals, Sourendro mesmerised them with the sweetness of his piano.

Raga Yaman was followed by a South Indian Tillana, after which they performed three evergreen love songs from the Indian Film Industry, belonging to different time spans.

On concluding, they presented a Raga Bhairavi by singing the famous ‘Miley Sur Jo Mera Tumhara’ in different Indian languages.

After the musical extravaganza got over, Soumyojit shared how Indain classical music is a medium of friendship to the global audience. The duo had also composed an orchestra for G 20, speaking of which Sourendro said, “We are so so honored and thankful to the Ministry of Culture and government of India for you know, asking us to compose the orchestra for G 20 Orchestra”

Talking about the compositon, he further added, “We composed the six original compositions, and we collaborated with musicians from 29 countries and it was a team of 150 musicians and we performed in Varanasi in August, in the presence of so many dignitaries from all across the country and around the globe. And it was something that we will cherish a lifetime for.”

Meanwhile, Sourendro and Soumyojit were accompanied by Ronit on drums, Himadri on bass guitars, Saikat and Gublu on keyboard, and Sayan who took care of the sound.
