Makeup is an art and we all love experimenting with it. But, no one likes when the makeup looks cakey. And that’s when the art of layering makeup comes into picture. According to Content Creator Sanya Puri, “The key to a flawless base is layering makeup products in the correct order i.e. skin prep first which includes your serums, moisturiser & sunscreen which is then followed by your cream products: primer, foundation, concealer, liquid blush, highlight & bronzer. Lastly, you put your powder products on top to set everything & then go ahead with a makeup setting mist to seal it all.”

“If you mess up with this order, for example skip your skincare or put your powder products before your cream products, the makeup can tend to separate & look cakey. Therefore; it’s extremely crucial to keep this order in mind while doing your makeup,” she added.

The Art Of Layering Makeup:

Aashka Goradia Goble, who is the Co-Founder, RENÉE Cosmetics said, “For makeup enthusiasts, mastering the art of makeup layering is essential for achieving a flawless, long-lasting look that complements your skin type and personal style. Proper makeup layering involves understanding how different products interact and work together to create a polished and professional finish.”

Here is a guide laid down by Dhriti Nandwani, who is an Educator, at Proarte:

  • Skincare First: Hydrate your skin to provide a smooth canvas for makeup. Use a gentle cleanser, toner and moisturiser to prep your face.
  • Primer: Apply a primer to create a smooth makeup base so that the layering stays in place and not come in direct contact with the skin as the primer acts as a barrier.
  • Colour Correction, Foundation and Concealer: Choose a corrector as per the discolouration on the skin and avoid applying foundation on it, rather cover it with a concealer and blend that with foundation to avoic to much layering on the face. Always choose a foundation that matches your skin tone and type. Apply it using a brush or sponge. Apply a concealer to cover the colour corrected part like your blemishes and dark circles. Use a shade lighter than your skin tone for under-eye concealing.

Aashka added the following to this list:

  • Setting Powder: Lock in your foundation and concealer with a translucent setting powder. This step helps control shine and prolong the longevity of your makeup.
  • Blush: Add a touch of color to your cheeks with blush. Select a shade that complements your skin tone and apply it to the apples of your cheeks, blending it upward and back toward your temples.
  • Eyeliner and Mascara: Define your eyes with eyeliner and enhance your lashes with mascara. Choose between liquid, pencil, or gel eyeliner based on your personal preference.
  • Lip Colour: Complete your makeup look with lipstick or lip gloss. Ensure that the lip color complements your overall look and matches your undertone.
  • Setting Spray: Seal the deal by using a setting spray after completing your makeup. This product helps your makeup stay in place throughout the day.

In the art of makeup layering, there are no strict rules; it’s all about balance and personal preference. The key is to pay attention to each product’s purpose and how they work together to achieve a flawless and long-lasting look,” she concluded.

Hacks To Save Time While Doing Makeup:

These steps take a lot of time & effort and aren’t practical for everyday. Sanya suggested that to save time, one layer makeup technique is perfect.

“This makeup hack is all over social media nowadays & it deserves all the hype it’s getting. This makeup trend is all about applying a single layer of makeup in one go, instead of applying different layers. Just apply all your liquid products (foundation, blush, concealer and bronzer) in one go and then blend all of it starting with the lightest shade (concealer > foundation > highlight > blush > bronzer) Keep spritzing some setting spray to your beauty blender to make blending easy & to help set everything in place without making it look cakey or heavy!”
