Former Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Is Now State’s ‘Bhai & Mama’. Here’s What Happened

New Delhi: A day after Mohan Yadav took oath as chief minister of Madhya Pradesh, Shivraj Singh Chouhan updated his bio on social media platform X on Thursday.

The former chief minister’s bio now reads ‘Bhai aur mama’ and ‘Former Chief Minister, Madhya Pradesh.’

The updated bio reflects Chouhan’s intent towards women’s welfare. Chouhan, during his stint as the CM of Madhya Pradesh, was addressed ‘Mama’ by many due to his focus on women’s welfare and safety.

In the recently concluded state assembly elections, the BJP secured a landslide victory by winning as many as 163 of the 230 seats, leaving the Congress a distant second at 66.

Chouhan’s women-centric schemes, like the ‘Mukhya Mantri Ladli Behna Yojana’, earned him the title of ‘mama’ and positioned him as a caring brother to the women in Madhya Pradesh.

The ‘Ladli Behna’ scheme initially provided eligible women Rs 1,250 monthly financial assistance, and was later promised to gradually hike the amount to Rs 3,000.

Earlier on Monday, Shivraj Singh Chouhan resigned as the chief minister to Governor Mangubhai Patel after Mohan Yadav was elected as the leader of the state legislative party.

A day ahead of Yadav’s swearing-in, Chouhan said he would rather die than ask something for himself from the leadership in Delhi.

He said this when asked about his ambitions of a central post after being at the helm of affairs in Madhya Pradesh for almost two decades. He said he did not like going to Delhi to ask for something and that he was in Madhya Pradesh and will remain there.

On his stint as the chief minister of MP, he said, “BJP has made me CM for 18 years. BJP has given me everything and now it’s time to return to the party. After Ladli, will now work on Lakhpati Yojana.”

Four-time CM Shivraj Chouhan took office in 2005, 2008, 2013, and 2020 and was the BJP’s longest-serving chief minister and was largely credited for the party’s victory in the state along with the Modi magic and the political prowess of master strategist Amit Shah.
