Lok Sabha Elections: With Lok Sabha elections just days away, boxer and Congress leader Vijender Singh joined the Bharatiya Janata Party at the party headquarters in the national capital on Wednesday.

Singh was India’s first Olympic medalist in boxing. He had fought the 2019 Lok Sabha election unsuccessfully from the South Delhi constituency as a Congress candidate.

According to news agency PTI, Vijender Singh’s name was doing the rounds for the last few days as the party’s nominee from Mathura, from where actor and incumbent MP Hema Malini is contesting again. Singh comes from the Jat community, which has political influence on many seats in Haryana, the state he comes from, western Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan.

Meanwhile, earlier in the day, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge launched the party’s ‘Ghar Ghar Guarantee’ initiative in the national capital under which it aims to reach out to eight crore households across the country and make them aware of its “guarantees”. The Congress chief launched the initiative from Usmanpur, Kaithwada, in the North East Delhi Parliamentary Constituency and distributed pamphlets on the party’s ‘Paanch Nyay Pachees Guarantee’.

During the launch of the initiative, the Congress chief said, “We are distributing this guarantee card to take our ‘Panch Nyay Pachees Guarantee’ to people. We want to take this initiative to eight crore households across the country,” as quoted by PTI. “All Congress leaders and workers will take this card to households across the counts and will tell people what our alliance government will do when it assumes power,” he further stated.

Kharge hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and said, “We give a guarantee that our government has always worked for people and will always do so,” as quoted by PTI. “PM Modi talks about Modi ki Guarantee but his guarantee never reaches the people,” he said. The Prime Minister talked about 2 crore jobs a year but people never got them, Kharge said. “We want to tell the country that whatever we promise, we fulfil,” Kharge asserted.
