Ex-US President Trump Rejects Nationwide Abortion Ban, Advocates ‘Law Of The State’

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump asserted on Monday that decisions regarding abortion rights should be delegated to US states, effectively opposing a nationwide abortion ban after months of mixed expression on one of the most contentious topics of the November election.

“My view is now that we have abortion where everybody wanted it from a legal standpoint, the states will determine by vote or legislation or perhaps both,” the likely Republican presidential nominee said in a video posted on his Truth Social network, “And whatever they decide must be the law of the land, in this case, the law of the state.”

According to news agency AFP, his remarks came after weeks of speculation about his position on the matter, sparked by a February New York Times article that claimed he had told advisers he supported a national abortion ban of 16 weeks but was reluctant to discuss it in public so as not to offend socially conservative supporters.

Decision Of US Supreme Court In 2022 On Abortion Right

A significant decision by the US Supreme Court in 2022, fortified by three justices nominated by Trump, delegated the authority to establish abortion laws to individual states. Consequently, some states have implemented nearly complete bans on abortion, while others, such as Maryland, have enacted laws to safeguard abortion rights. Many conservatives anticipate that a national ban could supersede laws like Maryland’s.

Democrats and US President Joe Biden, who is running against Trump for the presidency, have been heavily focusing on the issue and bringing up the fact that most Americans, according to polls, are against a federal ban.

Republican losses in other off-year elections and conservative states like Kansas, have been linked to the abortion issue.

In his released video, Trump repeated previous comments stating that like former Republican president Ronald Reagan, when it comes to abortion he is “strongly in favor of exceptions for rape, incest and the life of the mother.”

He also reaffirmed his “strong” endorsement of in vitro fertilization (IVF) access for “couples who are trying to have a precious baby. What could be more beautiful or better than that?”
