The nation has been witnessing a rising trend in the reported infections in the last two days with 602 fresh cases recorded on Wednesday, and 760 new cases on Thursday. On Tuesday, India logged 572 fresh cases on Tuesday. Till yesterday (December 4), 220.67 crore doses of Covid vaccines had been administered in India, as per the website of the Health Ministry.

Two people succumbed to the viral disease on Thursday and the active caseload stood at 4,423, said the health ministry, as reported by news agency PTI. One death was reported from Kerala and one was reported from Karnataka.

According to news agency IANS, another death was reported on Thursday when a 63-year-old woman, who had tested positive for Covid, succumbed to the virus during treatment at Lucknow’s SGPGIMS. This marked the first Covid-related death among patients in the state this year.

Dr Manoj Agrawal, chief medical officer (CMO) of Lucknow, shared details of the patient’s medical condition, and said, “The patient was suffering from acute kidney injury (stage 3) along with hypertension, diabetes mellitus, morbid obesity, severe sepsis, type-2 respiratory failure, and Covid pneumonia.”

IANS reported that as per a new study led by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), patients hospitalised with Omicron BA.5 are more likely to die than those with other Covid-19 variants or with flu. This specific study was published in the Open Forum Infectious Diseases and it looked at the proportion of hospitalised Covid-19 and influenza patients admitted to a US intensive care unit (ICU) in 2021 and 2022.
