CAA Rules: JNU Issues Advisory, Appeals To Students To Maintain Peace

New Delhi: The Jawaharlal Nehru University on Monday issued an advisory urging students to stay vigilant and uphold “peace and harmony” on campus. The advisory was released shortly after the Centre notified the regulations of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), clearing the way for its implementation prior to the Lok Sabha elections, as reported by news agency PTI.

“In view of the ongoing students’ election process on campus and various events being organised by the student bodies, all stakeholders of the campus are appealed to remain vigilant and contribute to maintaining peace and harmony on campus,” the advisory said.

“The administration firmly reiterates its commitment to zero tolerance towards any form of violence or indiscipline on campus and appeals to all stakeholders of the campus to desist from all such activities,” it added.

In December 2019, university campuses in the national capital witnessed protests as a group of students demonstrated against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC), urging the central government to repeal the law.

Jamia Millia Islamia and other universities became focal points of the protests, witnessing police intervention against the protesting students.

Following the notification of the CAA rules on Monday, protests reignited at the Jamia Millia Islamia campus, prompting a significant police presence at the university.

Notably, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Monday formally announced the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), facilitating expedited citizenship for undocumented non-Muslim migrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. The CAA provisions enable Indian citizenship for six minority communities – Hindus, Christians, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists and Parsis – who entered India before December 31, 2014, from these neighboring countries.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah took to X and informed, “The Modi government today notified the Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2024. These rules will now enable minorities persecuted on religious grounds in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan to acquire citizenship in our nation. With this notification PM Shri @narendramodi Ji has delivered on another commitment and realised the promise of the makers of our constitution to the Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians living in those countries.”
