Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court on Monday sent BRS Leader K Kavitha to Judicial custody till April 23, 2024 in the CBI case related to the now scrapped Delhi excise policy, news agency ANI reported. Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested the daughter of former Telangana chief minister K. Chandrashekar Rao from Tihar Jail, where she was held after her arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a money laundering case.

As her three-day police custody comes to an end, Kavitha was produced before the court by CBI on Monday.

According to the CBI, Kavitha is considered as one of the key conspirators in the liquor policy case and is suspected of withholding information that is crucial to the probe. The probe agency asked for 14 days of judicial custody.

However, her legal counsel contended that, as per the Supreme Court’s judgement in Pankaj Bansal, an accused person possesses the right to respond as they see fit. “The accused is not obligated to answer questions in a manner that is tailored to meet specific requirements,” the counsel was quoted as saying by LiveLaw in its report.

Recently, after getting a permission from the special court, the central probe agency officials questioned Kavitha inside the Tihar jail.

The Bharat Rasthra Samithi (BRS) leader was interrogated regarding WhatsApp chats recovered from the phone of co-accused Buchi Babu, as well as documents pertaining to a land transaction. Allegedly, an amount of Rs 100 crore was transferred to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) as kickbacks to influence the Excise policy in favour of a liquor lobby in the national capital.

Kavitha (46) was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) from her residence in Banjara Hills, Hyderabad, on March 15.
