As India preps for ‘one nation, one election’ bill, what are the potential benefits and drawbacks?

The centre is planning to introduce “One Nation, One Election bill ”that will  streamline the election system in a manner that elections to the Lok Sabha and state assemblies can be synchronized together. As we know that general elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies are held at the gap of 5 years in India. Apart from this election for some state assemblies are held separately which puts huge burden on our nation’s economy. Currently, these elections are typically held at different times that results into multiple election cycles or phases in the country each year. “One Nation, One Election Bill” aims to conduct all the elections on the same day on a single cycle.

The “One Nation, One Election bill,” which the centre plans to introduce, will streamline the electoral process so that polls for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies can be coordinated jointly. As is common knowledge, India holds national elections for the Lok Sabha and state legislatures every five years. In addition to this, elections for several state assemblies are held separately, placing a significant load on the economy of our country. Currently, because these elections are usually held at various times, the nation experiences many election cycles or phases each year. In order to organise all elections on the same day during a single cycle, “One Nation, One Election” is in the priority list of the government. However, it has a good as well as bad side.

At the same time while maintaining effective public benefits, our governance systems will be transparent and accessible to the public. By doing and encouraging so, the media including all types of communication channels will stand out as people’s media. I sincerely hope that this wish comes true soon and transforms this nation by making our it a better place than before.
