Apple wants a piece of Google’s Chromebook market, and a new MacBook could work

Apple wants to bring another MacBook lineup which could be priced lower than the Air and Pro models for consumers but will it work?

Apple is planning to launch affordable MacBook models in 2024 as the company looks to build on its market position and get more people to buy the MacBooks next year. Reports claim Apple is going to bring the new MacBooks in 12-inch and 13-inch variants, but we’re sure that everyone is intrigued about the possible ‘affordable’ tag on these rumoured Macs.

It seems Apple wants to bring these MacBooks for around $700 (Rs 56,800 approx) which brings the starting price to well over what the existing MacBook lineup costs. Apple feels the need to have another MacBook lineup that can sit below the MacBook Air and Pro models, which, quite frankly, are no longer affordable for most consumers.

The new Macs will be competing with Google in the Chromebook category, which seems rather ambitious as the latter is priced well under $300 in most markets.

The other reason for bringing budget MacBooks could be the drop in demand for iPads, especially in the education segment, where Apple sees a potential to market these upcoming Macs and help build its revenue stream in the market. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggests Apple could be targeting around 10 million units of these MacBooks shipped per year.

When you hear the plan behind these MacBooks it does feel like a business strategy that could help Apple offset the drop in revenue from iPads and target a new segment which clearly needs a Chromebook alternative. In fact, if the company can bring these MacBook for under Rs 60,000 in markets like India, Apple could make a serious dent in the market share of popular brands like HP, Dell, Lenovo and more. The festive sales are a clear indication of how the right price for a MacBook could bring thousands to pick up the Macs in the country.

It would be a challenge to price the product aggressively if they are imported but even then, consumers would happily jump at the chance to upgrade to a MacBook, which has iPhone-like aspirational value for many. Having said that, Apple will need to ensure that the affordable tag is not misleading and it uses quality materials and features to make the product.
