Five labourers lost their lives, and an equal number suffered injuries on Monday when a speeding truck ran over them while they were asleep along the Nagpur-Mumbai NH 6 highway, passing through the Buldhana district of Maharashtra. The accident occurred at approximately 5:30 a.m. today. According to police authorities, the labourers had sought refuge in makeshift huts along the side of a service road being constructed in Wadner Bholji village when the accident occurred.

A truck, plying on the same road, ran over the unsuspecting labourers, causing five deaths. Three individuals lost their lives on the spot, while two others succumbed to their injuries during treatment at a nearby hospital, as confirmed by a senior police official, as per news agency PTI.

Additionally, five other persons suffered injuries in the incident.

In the aftermath of the accident, the truck driver responsible for the accident is currently on the run, PTI reported.

The Nandura police station has registered a case against the driver in connection with the tragedy.

Dr. Vijay Pawar, Chief Medical Officer at Malkapur Upazila Hospital, shared details about the incident saying, “At around 5 AM this morning, we received a call about an accident. Two patients were brought in dead, and their post-mortem examinations have been completed.”

“Around 11:30 another patient died and they were brought for postmortem which has concluded,” he told news agency ANI.

The accident serves as a grim reminder of a recent incident wherein seven labourers died when a service lift crashed in a building in Maharashtra’s Thane last month.
