The Centre has cracked the whip on website promoting economic crimes and blocked 100 such websites, operated by ‘overseas actors’ which were facilitating task-based and organised illegal investment-related economic crimes. The Centre said these websites were operated by using digital advertisement, chat messengers and mule or rented accounts.

The Union Home Minister last week had recommended the ban on such websites involved in duping people with part time job frauds.

Following this, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) blocked these websites invoking its power under the Information Technology Act, 2000

The Centre in its statements said the proceeds from these frauds were found to be siphoned out of the country by using card network, crypto currency, overseas ATM withdrawals and international Fintech companies.
